Who you are working with

J.D. Baker

J.D. Baker

AP & High School

With over 15 years working with high school students, my goal is to help them reach their full academic and civic potential. I tutor AP U.S. Government & Politics and AP U.S. History, having supported over 35 students. Each student who personally reported their scores to me earned a 4 or 5.

As a community educator and historian, I'm earning my master's degree at Georgia State University, where my research covers the same history at the heart of these courses. I curate personalized learning plans from reputable sources, adding context from my scholarship and professional experience. Beyond the textbook, I show each student how to read context clues, build an argument from evidence, and communicate clearly.

At Georgia State, I support its Early College program, engaging daily with high schoolers earning college credit. Every student has a unique set of strengths and challenges, so I build an individualized plan for each one's short- and long-term success.

How it works

1

A free consultation

Thirty minutes to hear where you actually are. Bring a graded essay, a syllabus, or a recent score. No cost, no obligation.

2

A written plan

A target, a weekly focus, and a realistic timeline. You know what we are working on and why before the first paid session.

3

Sessions and evidence

Writing marked up in a shared document you keep, on the actual rubric you are graded against. If it is not working, the plan changes.

Rates

The same rates apply to both coaches, for every subject.

Common questions

How many sessions does someone usually need?

It depends on where you are starting and how much time is left. A student who knows the content but cannot finish a timed essay may need six to eight sessions. Someone behind in the course itself is a longer commitment. We will tell you honestly at the consultation, including if you need fewer sessions than you expected.

Is it too late to start?

Rarely. Writing improves faster than content knowledge, and writing is where most of the grade is lost. Even a few weeks of focused work on the rubric moves scores. If we do not think we can help in the time remaining, we will say so rather than take your money.

Do you help with the actual class, or just the exam?

Both. We work from your syllabus, your assignments, and your upcoming tests, then shift toward exam format as the date approaches.

Is virtual as effective as in person?

For these subjects, yes. The work is documents, writing, and discussion, all of which travel well over video. Written feedback is often better virtually, because everything already lives in a shared file you keep. In person availability depends on the coach and your location, so ask at the consultation.

Do you write the essay?

No. You write it and we coach it. Every word submitted is yours. We ask questions, mark up drafts, and push you to say the thing you actually mean, which is what a strong essay requires anyway.

What if cost is a problem?

Say so at the consultation. We hold reduced rate seats every term. No application and no documentation, just ask.
